 NOTAN

Notan (a Japanese word meaning dark-light) focuses on the interaction between positive and negative space, a relationship embodied in the ancient symbolism of the Yang and the Yin. In composition, it recognizes the separate but equally important identity of both a shape and it’s background.  Notan, is an ancient principle of composition, that can help meet creative challenges with fresh perspectives.

*******************************************

The creative challenge of translating the design or pattern of a work of art as seen in flat areas of dark and light values only,

compare chiarascuro....

A concept that can lend itself in many dramatic renditions by using the medium of fiber

within a commitment to designing and constructing art quilts.

From the study of positive and negative space, through the concepts of tension, subordination, abstraction and distortion.

All techniques that artists must use in translating the three dimensional world into

the two dimensional space.

This exhibit explores these many possibilities.

********************************************

We put thirty spokes together and call it a wheel;

But it is on the space where there is nothing, that the utility of the wheel depends.

We turn clay to make a vessel;

But it is on the space where there is nothing, that the utility of the vessel depends.

We pierce doors and windows to make a house;

And it is on these spaces where there is nothing, that the utility of the house depends.

Therefore, just as we take advantage of what is, we should recognize the utility of what is not.
